RETAIL giant Argos is to open a superstore at Rayleigh Weir.

The new store will be in unit three of the Rayleigh Weir retail park when it opens after Christmas, according to an employee at neighbouring store Smyth’s Toys.

Argos confirmed it is looking to open a new store in the Rayleigh Weir area, but refused to say exactly where or when it would open.

The Smyth’s Toys worker, who did not want to be named, said the new Argos would be opening next door.

He said: “All we know is it will be opening after Christmas and it will be in unit three.”

Denise Bigwood, a spokeswoman for Argos, also refused to confirm whether its shop in Rayleigh High Street would close, despite rumours among traders that it will shut.

Castle Point councillor Norman Smith, responsible for economic development, welcomed the prospect of a new shop in Stadium Way.

He said: “More local jobs is an issue for us, so to see more coming into the Rayleigh Weir area is good.

“It’s a good development site. Other businesses there are doing very well. An Argos going there could only be a good thing.”

Shopper Andrea Morgam 37, of Thundersley, said: “I think it will be good.

“There is plenty of space for parking and it should be less hassle going there.

“If you want to go to Argos, then you have to go to Southend or Basildon really or collect at the Rayleigh shop. I just wish it would open before Christmas.”
