Unions move to save 600 jobs at Eon call centre in Rayleigh

TRADE unions have made a last-ditch effort to stop a south Essex call centre closing with the loss of 600 jobs.

Rayleigh MP Mark Francois said unions had put together a counter proposal to Eon over its closure of the call centre in London Road, Rayleigh.

The energy company’s bosses announced in January the call centre would be closing as it was creating centres of excellence elsewhere in the country.

Mr Francois said he hoped Eon would reconsider its decision.

He said: “I hope Eon might recognise the very real contribution its employees at Rayleigh have made to returning its retail division to profitability, and it might reconsider the proposed closure.

“However, if that proves not to be the case, as many employees at the site obviously fear, I would like the maximum amount of support to be made available to my constituents affected by the closure.”

The trade unions proposals are believed to detail ways of making savings, but keeping the site open.

Staff are now in a consultation period with management until mid-April, with the closure of the call centre expected in June.

Eon spokesman Jonathan Smith said: “We continue to consult with various stakeholders with regard to the planned closure of Rayleigh, but the rationale behind our plans is very strong.

Bitter pill for Rayleigh to swallow and hope for a miracle turn around by EON. Hurts even more when you hear of HSBC bonuses still being paid to Top Fat Cats on the same day this article was posted.

All switch your energy requirements to another provider if they close it, let them have an economic impact from their short-sighted plans.

my friend now wants to leave, the atmosphere there is awful, they are still beating the staff over the head with a big stick saying if you dont sell sell sell, we will manage you out and you wont get your redundancy. How nice is that??? What sort of company can publicly announce 600 job cuts in one office to the newspaper first before the decency of telling the staff, and then carry on threatening them, ok the threat they had before was "if you dont sell sell sell, you will lose your jobs" well that has happened so they have changed the wording to "if you dont sell sell sell, you will be managed out and you wont get your redundancy package" Lovely company...... not

Erm, pretty much any big company in this delightful nation of ours, alas.

I feel that the way E-on have treated their staff is an utter discrace!Lets have less threats of scare mongering LOYAL staff of losing redundancy pay, they have done everything asked of them ,including trying to sell substandard central heating cover -which is like trying to sell a WHITE CAT to a witch NOBODY wants the cover !!! "IF"Rayleigh closes ,you have made a huge mistake!!!You will not find better ,passionate staff that care for the customer as much as Rayleigh staff !!!

Why are the supervisors still pushing the staff. Do the Jobsworth's not realise that they will all be queing together in the job center in June. With the older supervisor staff looking at the rest of their working life on the scrapheap, pushing trolleys at a supermarket, or holding a lollypop at schooltime
