Council denies van driver parked illegally

AN eagle-eyed Echo reader spotted this council van parking illegally, or so she thought.

Rochford Council has defended its van driver, saying he wouldn’t have been breaking parking rules for another 16 minutes.

Emma Ambrose, of Highmead, Rayleigh, said: “This picture was taken outside Rayleigh Primary School and is a classic example of traffic wardens abusing their power.

“I think this is a disgusting abuse of their power. If I had parked in front or behind this vehicle I would have, without a doubt, received a ticket upon his return.”

She added: “He obviously feels he is exempt from obeying the Highway Code.”

But after examining the photograph, Rochford Council denied the driver had broken any rules.

Spokesman Patrick John said: “The picture was taken at 2.14pm.

“If you look at the yellow sign sign, it says the van could park there until 2.30pm, another 16 minutes.”

The no waiting sign may cover those periods, but the vehicle is still parked on a yellow zig-zag area outside a school, on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic. It really does not set a good example.

A good example to who?All the mums who are going to park where they want to anyway, usually blocking the traffic outside most schools.

If the van was on the Zig-Zags during the non prohinited time then no offence has been comitted ...hardly a story then is it?

Seems the council is perfectly correct, and that this is a lot of fuss over nothing.

The picture taken was at 2;13pm the restriction starts at 2;30pm-4pm as stated on the big yellow sign before the van in the picture obviously taken by someone who has been given a ticket before. perhaps that person should be more aware of signs and lines and then they would not have recieved their ticket and would not sound so bitter about it. The van had parked to issue a ticket to a vehicle parked on the same side as the photographer and that is an 8am-6pm restn had the van parked there perhaps there might have been a story as it stands it is a total waste of a picture and story

Its sad that people have resorted to trying to catch the council out now.
Shame they didnt look at the signs before 'telling' to the newspaper.
