TWO young lads will be demonstrating a new way of keeping fit at Crufts dog show this week.
Kallum Fletcher, nine, from Rawreth and Christopher Jones, 15, from Rayleigh will be showing off their skills in increasingly popular sport CaniX – essentially cross country running with your dog.
Kallum a pupil at Our Lady of Ransom School in Rayleigh, will be harnessed to his springer spaniel Roxy and Christopher will run with chocolate labrador Paolo.
Kallum’s grandmother, Lesley Morgan, practice manager at the Earls Hall Veterinary Surgery in Rayleigh Road, Eastwood, is hoping the sport will catch on locally. She said: “It’s a sort of ‘getting fit with Fido’ campaign. We are trying to encourage people to get fit with their pets. Kallum will be at Crufts on Friday, and then they hope to take part in the European championships in Belgium.
“It is great fun for owners and dogs alike,” she added.
The sport allows owners to run with dogs across country tracks, typically around 2.5km. Dogs are attached to their owners with bungee harnesses. For details, visit www.canix.co.uk
