Bin collections suspended in Rochford

BIN collections in Rochford have been suspended due to the icy conditions.

The council says it has stopped all collections until further notice and asks residents to leave bins at the edge of their property and continue to check the website for updates.

This morning's Health Walk in Hullbridge due to start at 10.45am has been cancelled due to poor weather.

All Leisure Centres in the District are open as normal.

For more information about the rubbish collections, go to www.rochford.gov.uk.

Severe weather? It's snow. And not a lot of it.

Wow ! Hold the front page.

I suppose it's about time we had some fresh "news" on here though.

Come on southend are managing it. Foxes will love the rubbish in rochford. They could have managed some roads surely.

A very poor excuse - the main roads are fine and if the council could just give some thought how we can store small amounts of salt in the side roads.

Are the council not able to issue a small amount of salt bags for residents to spread over side roads/pavements?

I'm sure the community could get together to sort this one?

It wouldnt be a 'poor excuse' if a bin lorry, or bin man with full bin had hit and damaged a car, or worse a person.

i dont think any council is going to cancel collections if they really dont have to - it means everything is running behind and they are playing catch up - as well as fielding calls from people calling them useless and rubbish for just trying to protect the safety of its workers and people on the street.

every year i just dont understand the big deal with bins, so they are delayed, and its annoying but you're not going to die or have to stop living your life just because your bin is not emptied. There is a bigger picture here after all. Stop worrying about a full bin and go do something fun.

and rochford has closed bins, so foxes arent going to be causing a problem. I'm in southend where if you leave out the rubbish and they cant make the collection you have to bring it back inside your house when its been outside and thts not very nice and it could get ripped open by animals. at least the bins are sealed and alot easier to put in and out without getting gross or taking back in your house.

The bin staff, as far as i could see were put to good use clearing pavements etc, which was something that didnt happen last time, it's not like they did nothing. and clear pavements for people who have switched to walking is always a good thing.

i agree the issue of side roads needs to be addressed as these stay dangerous for days, and last time weeks after the main routes were clear, which meant getting out & in of your own road was the most dangerous part of your trip. I'd like to see councils come up with a plan to distrubite their grit stores on side roads once the main routes are running well.

I agree with ddf35. In fact, our recycling bin did get emptied yesterday and it's the most important one because it's the only one that ever gets full. The green bin doesn't matter - food waste is not going to become smelly with the low night-time temperatures we're getting. No animals can get into these bins, so no worry about waste getting scattered about. It's the two-legged animals that do that - beer cans, crisp packets and McDonald's debris, not the fault of foxes.

A well argued point dd35, but I didn't see any staff out gritting. I saw quite a bit between St. Teresa and Holt Farm Schools, but i put this down to the schools getting together. I understand Parish Councils were given an amount for distribution - anyone know about this? I'm sure if a quantity of bags were put at strategic places - the community could work out a way of working together to ensure the side roads could be gritted.

I dont know for sure, but i think that path clearing was sita staff. but i cant 100% confirm that. But i did see Sita staff clearing pavements in Rochford, and they were a lot better than the last year we had snow. The path near the station was also cleared on the 2nd day, but I don't know if that was them. Someone i know slipped here and got concussion (for xmas, nice!) so it was good to see.

I dont know details of the funding, but i understand , as usual budgets have been cut or allwances of grit or something meaning places dont get what they mean.

overall the side road/pavement issue really needs attention and ECC need to help seeing as they are the primary body in charge of it.
