We’re so proud of our Tom
THE aunt of diving sensation Tom Daley spoke of her pride at watching him take Bronze – and her future hopes for the young superstar.
While millions sat on the edge of their sofas, Suzanne 40, and husband Kevin Selvester, 42, were cheering Tom on from poolside at the Olympic Park on the penultimate day of the Games.
Suzanne of Westview Drive, Rayleigh , recalled: “By the time he got to the finals, there was no doubt in my mind that Tom would be getting a medal, but watching him is almost unbearable at times.
“One dive and it can all go wrong.
“We were all there in Bejing four years ago, but we didn’t expect him to get a medal then because he was still so young.
“After all he has been through recently and the hard work he has put in, he really deserved it this time around. It has been a fantastic few weeks.”
Suzanne also told how she got to rub shoulders with other famous faces from British sport, including double-gold medalist, long distance runner Mo Farah.
She said: “Everywhere we looked on Saturday there were all these fantastic athletes and every single one of them was so lovely.
“Mo came over and congratulated us on Tom’s success. He is great!”
Suzanne revealed how Tom’s mum Debbie, who is Kevin’s sister, and young brothers Will and Ben were staying with them in Rayleigh while the teenager trained at the Southend Diving Centre in Garons Park, Southend.
She also revealed how the family expect him to be rather busy from now on – and are sure he will cope just fine.
She said: “He has lots of promotional work to do in London, so me and his mum are going to go meet him for lunch tomorrow, before she heads back to Plymouth.
“But he is very level headed and I think Tom always has been a bit of an old soul.
“He handles the pressure incredibly well. Everyone loves him and I think it helps that he’s a good looking boy!”
It also seems Suzanne already has her mind on more medals for Tom, and the next Olympic Games.
She added: “We will definitely all be going to Rio in four years time.
“Tom was so close to getting silver this time I have no doubt that he will be getting another Olympic medal.”
