CLUBBERS have raised more than £1,000 in memory of a teenager at the nightclub where he suffered a heart attack one week earlier.
Southend nightclub Mayhem, where 18-year-old Mark Abbott suffered the first of an ultimately fatal series of heart attacks, hosted a fundraiser in his memory on Monday night.
Friends of Mark, of Newington Avenue, Southend, collected money for Southend Hospital’s critical care unit and to for a headstone for the South Essex College student on the door.
The club, in Warrior Square, donated all entrance fees from the “Happy Mondays” night, which Mark regularly attended, to the two causes.
Organiser Dale Elliott, 28, of Eastern Avenue, who knew Mark since he was baby when they grew up nextdoor to each other in Surrey Avenue, Leigh, said: “There is nothing you can give them that will bring Mark back, but I know because they are quite a large family it’s going to be difficult for them to give him a good send off.
“No-one wants to bury their kids. I just wanted to help the family.”
