Woman soldier signed up to support troops after partner killed in action
A FEMALE soldier who signed up to support troops after her partner was killed in action in Afghanistan has won an award for her outstanding work.
The Army has commended Lance Corporal Amanda Schisano, 37, of Southend, raising morale, counselling younger recruits and improving facilities at the patrol base in Helmand Province, where she serves.
Her partner, Corporal Daniel Nield, died of injuries sustained while on patrol with 1st Battalion The Rifles in the southern province in 2009.
L Cpl Schisano said: “I’m here because of him. I wanted to join the army because I saw what the army meant to him.
“I wanted to somehow stay close to Danny in this way by supporting the troops on the front line.”
On receiving her award, she said: “I’m absolutely gobsmacked. I’m so surprised and it means so much.”
As a detachment commander for the Expeditionary Forces Institute (EFI), L Cpl Schisano is responsible for retail and welfare for the troops at “Patrol Base 2” in central Helmand.
