THE old adage one man’s trash is another man’s treasure was proved at a celebration in Rayleigh to say thanks to families who recycle.

More than 400 people visited Mill Arts and Events Centre to help celebrate ten years since Rochford District Council’s first kerb-side recycling scheme.

The district is the country’s top council for recycling with 66.82 per cent of all waste being recycled.

The free event to celebrate the council’s recycling initiatives included a fashion show of recycled and reused clothing from students at Seevic College, in Thundersley, and FitzWimarc School, in Rayleigh.

Students from Downhall Primary School, in Rayleigh, performed “recycled rhythms”

using old dustbins, brooms and household utilities while the Mushroom Theatre Company celebrated with their rendition of The Monster Mash.

Amber Dawn Lynford, six, from the Mushroom Theatre Company, said: “This has been a great day. I loved our Monster Mash dance. There are so many people here. It was brilliant.

“I used an old costume my mum found for me as it is important to use things over and over as much as we can.”
