Travel woe delaying £50m sale of airport

THE planned £50million sale of Southend Airport is taking longer than expected because of problems in the aviation market, managing director Alastair Welch has admitted.

Mr Welch also said it was important to ensure any potential buyers have got the money to push the airport plans forward.

It was originally thought the sale would be completed in June, but, nearly three months later, there has still been no announcement.

It's not looking great all over with the economy now in utter turmoil. With Holiday Companys and Airlines folding or struggling the need to expand airports has to come into question.
Only those more resilient airlines will survive, a lot more will go. Tough times ahead for us all including airports. At least Alistair Welch is up front with developments in a changing economy and the affect on the potential sale of the airport at Southend.

not forgetting, of course, that AIG (one of the most significant interested parties) are in a preilous position themselves at the moment and could yet end up in a similar position to Lehmann Bros if the recent reports are anything to go by . . . . on a slightly different matter, yet still airport related, has anyone else noticed the clearance work being carried out at the end of the runway at Eastwoodbury Lane (on the opposite side to the church) - i can only assume this is for a proposed new taxiway once the runway extension is completed.

i think the work is so the runway can comply with safety regulations regarding clearances.

Works are most likely just Runway End Safety Area (RESA) a stipulation set down by the CAA for a piece of land at the end of the runway to enable an aircraft to run on to in the event of an overshoot.

The work in progress is to move the boundary fence further away from the runway edge so as to comply fully with the current CAA regulations. The RESA lies beyond the end of the runway, on the other side of Eastwoodbury Lane, and has been in place since late 2004 I believe.
