Family saved by smoke alarm

A FAMILY had a lucky escape after being woken by their smoke alarm.

The smoke alarm at the house in Sunningdale Avenue, Leigh, woke the family up after a candle set fire to a window sill.

The small blaze was then put out with a jug of water before it could spread.

Firemen from Leigh station were called but the blaze was already out.

Firefighter Dan Hawkins said there were two parents and at least three teenagers in the house at the time of the fire just after midnight.

He said: "They are lucky they had a smoke alarm otherwise this could have been a lot worse. This just shows how important it is to have an alarm fitted."

Why was a candle alight when everyone was in bed??? Two parents and at least three teenagers didnt have the intelligence to realise you put cnadles out before going to bed!!!!!! Does no-one have common sence anymore??
