Boy injured on beach

A 15-year-old boy suffered serious neck and back injuries after diving into shallow water.

At 4pm yesterday the coastguard were called to the beach next to Uncle Tom's Cabin, Shoebury, after the boy had dived into three feet of water.

The ambulance service attended and the boy was taken on a spinal board to Southend Hospital.

I give it one week before Southend Council erect 1000's of warning signs along the beach to avoid being sued!

such sympathy!

Yes it was a foolish thing to do but he's paid the price and his family must be worried sick.

I hope the lad recovers fully and swiftly

Nearly an example of Darwin in action!!!

Before anyone starts saying "maybe he was unfamiliar with the area and didn't know it was only 3ft deep", the argument still stands, you don't dive in if don't know how deep the water is, simples!

I do sincerely hope the boy makes a full & speedy recovery and that he learns from this.

Unfortunatly Kids today are not taught by their parents / elder brothers or sisters, on how to be safe out in the world. They get stuck on the game machines / PCs, and do-not realise the you can get realy hurt out in the world. The fantasy world of games machines, gives them a false sence of invicability.

Thus saying, I wish this lad a speedy recovery, with no long lasting side affects.

Oh! And by the way, I spent my summers on the beach at Westcliff in the 1950s. And there was accidents at that time as well. One of my late brothers actually saved someones life by the old Westcliff jetty, and we all learnt how dangerouse the sea and mud flats can be, and the grownups look out for every one , and just their own kids.

Totally agree Marshwalker. I haven't had quite as many years experience as you but I was always down the beach at Shoebury/Southend as a kid where I was taught the dangers of the tides/mudflats and not diving into water that's either shallow or you don't know the depth of. Used to walk out to the Mullbery Harbour too but only after checking with the coast gaurd it was safe to do so.

Unfortunately, as you said, this kind of potentially life-saving info isn't being passed on and common sense seems to have disappeared.....
