Updated: Southend United winding up order adjourned

SOUTHEND United Football Club have been given 14 days to produce evidence on a disuputed sum owed to HMRC.

The club faced the High Court in London today to contest a winding up order, but the hearing was adjourned for 28 days to allow the dispute to be resolved.

Prior to the hearing, a cluib statement said: "Supporters are aware that, following the payment of £2.15m to HMRC in November last year and on analysis of the sums (primarily including interest and surcharges), the club disputed the amount paid by circa £200,000.

"This became the subject of further, we believe wholly unnecessary, action by HMRC with them serving a Petition around Christmas and the Club submitting an Appeal to the Tribunals Service with a cross claim.

"This issue will hopefully be settled in the Club's favour - in the short term - and in the meantime, the Club continues to make payments on the dates as they fall due."

Confusing or what?

How the hell can you run a business with this uncertainty.

Seems all strangely quiet on the Ron front and certainly dont need this. About time we heard that the diggers were starting work on the new ground. Need some feel good story from The Blues. It's all negative stuff from Tilly right across to The Echo.

Essex22 - not sure what you mean, rent on Roots Hall has been waved since Ron Martin bought out the business from Martin Dawn. Do you have any idea of the day to day running costs of a football club, I do as a shareholder and suggest anyone who thinks Mr Martin pockets money is so far from the truth it is amazing/

Thought there was a dispute over the last paymenbt Blues over paid, and the tax man was not refunding the money.

Typical of the Tax man to go after the smaller clubs whilst the boring Premership clubs are in much deeper dodo with the tax get off scot free.

Accord to BBC TV News this morning (Weds) this story not to be taken lightly. Seems a few other clubs in dire straights too (Portsmouth & Cardiff)
Football League all round needs to get it's act together.

Why are they allowed by the taxman to get so far behind with their tax, he takes mine monthly.

The problem is the taxman trusts Ron Martin as much as most Southend supporters do now - ie: not very much. They've had over a month now to decide whether the club had overpaid and they clearly do not think we have. Lucky we haven't spent the Lee Barnard money yet.

As an aside to this story - on his Facebook status a prominent Southend United player has stated that he hasn't been paid his salary TEN days after his due pay-day. What on earth is going on at the club? Why haven't the players and staff been paid?

The fact the case has been adjourned indicates that something is still wrong and money may be owed to HMRC Not monay owed back to SUFC due to overpayment! Rumours at last home game (Swindon) said that Tilly had not been paid since October!! This came from a very good source. I did think Ron had sorted it out but it appears it has not and the statement on the SUFC website is a joke and an insult to supporters who have paid for season tickets etc. We have a right to know exactly what the situation is!
The club made an offer which a number of us agreed to to buy our season tickets for next season in December and if England won the world cup we would get our money refunded. I did this to try and help the club by giving them some funding, now they treat me like a mushroom, keep me in the dark and feed me s**t.

Blooming well right then, sit up. I'm going to tell you how it's going to be. The cash will be paid so that the club will continue thus the new stadium will be built.

As regards Portsmouth Football Club, how can the taxman let them get £11.5 mil.lion behind on there taxes.
