Man has card stolen from cashpoint

A MAN had his debit card stolen from a Westcliff cashpoint machine, which was later used to steal cash from his bank account.

A 63-year-old man was using the ATM at HSBC in Hamlet Court Road in Westcliff around 11.25am on Wednesday, February 17, 2010.

He became distracted by two Asian men, one of whom tried to put something on the keypad area of the ATM and started talking to him, which caused confusion – before a second man told him the machine didn’t work. Once the two men had walked off the man noticed that his card was missing. It was later used to withdraw £600 from his account.

Pc Neil Monk said: “We’d urge people to be aware of their surroundings whilst using a cashpoint machine and ensure no-one is standing close behind you. If you think someone is watching what you’re doing, or if someone appears to be trying to distract you, you should end the transaction and immediately report it to bank staff.”

Police are keen to identify the pictured men and speak to them in relation to this Hamlet Court Road incident. If you know who they are, please contact Pc Monk on 0300 333 4444 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

When EVER somebody stands close to me when using one of these machines, I CANCEL the transaction, then try again only AFTER they have moved back, or better still GONE, and I am of the same age as the Victim in this case.

Let's just hope they CHOKED on what they spent his cash on?

Two more outstanding 'local' citizens pictured there then. The rot set in for Westcliff about 12 years ago, so glad I saw it coming and moved out.

I agree with Trainman I would do the same..and I watch all the time anyone who approaches...

I take my money out in the daytime..in a secure area such as a Bank that will have plenty of Cameras or a Store that has Security patrolling .

The first step to Personal Security is not taking a risk..sadly being on your own after dark is a huge risk..hope your caught soon Lowlifes

It says in the article that it was 11.25 am and the picture shows it was light, it says the HSBC machine. Just seems this poor man was doing all he could have to safeguard himself. These criminals know every trick in the book. What will happen if they are caught - slapped wrists no doubt.
