Carry telegraph pole in aid of Help for Heroes

1:40pm Thursday 2nd September 2010

TWENTY fit and strong volunteers are needed to take part in an unusual fundraising challenge for Help for Heroes.

Men and women aged over 16 are needed to work in teams to carry a 50kg telegraph pole on a stretcher, around the Southend 10km course.

The Southend 10km run is being held on October 3 and the two teams will receive training from military instructor Rob Read.

Rob, who runs the British Military Martial Arts club, at the Deanes School, in Thundersley, every Thursday evening, is seeking people who think they can take on the task.

He said: “At last year’s 10km I had a team carrying a stretcher complete with a resus doll and it weighed about 50kg. The telegraph pole will be about the same.

“I want two teams of ten, who will train with me once a week for five weeks to be able to complete the event. I want to do this properly and to raise money at the same time.

“We’ve chosen to raise money for Help for Heroes as my instructors are all ex-military.”

If you are interested in taking part call Rob on 07725 012426 or e-mail bmmaessex@gmail.com Entry costs £36 including hire of the hall, training and a T-shirt, and each participant must raise sponsorship for the charity.

Training starts tomorrow.
