MORE bicycle stands and shelters are being installed across the town, says Southend Council.
Secure cycle shelters have been installed in most of the borough’s schools, Garon Park, Belfairs Swimming Centre and the University of Essex.
Next, Southend Victoria, Southend East and Leigh railway stations are due to receive new shelters by March 2011. Cycle parking ares are also being put in around the town.
Mark Flewitt, Southend’s councillor for planning and transport, said: “This is another important step in the development of Southend’s Cycle Town status”
“It makes it much easier for people to use their bikes in their everyday routine.
“I hope that people take advantage of these new facilities and get on their bikes.”
Southend achieved Cycle Town Status in June 2008 when Southend won a £3.2 million Government grant to become one of Britain’s top cycling towns.
