Surely they should have taken him to a vet? Another poor bit of Echo writing...

For crying out loud.... Dogs are better swimers than us, and is it worth your life for a dog?

The most important things is the dog is safe and the fire crews are safe.

He should have kept his dog away from the lake. But when the dog went in I admire him for risking himself to save it, he probably shouldn't have but I'd have probably done the same.

maybe the dog owner was initially and foremost out on the ice to pick up the dog's droppings like a good, responsible dog owner..

So a dog falls through the ice and this idiot of an adult then thinks it'll support his weight - fool!

I'm surprised that nobody has commented on the fact that someone had the time to video the incident.

I HOPE they charge him for the rescue?

WHY do people take their dogs to places like this, when asked NOT to venture on to the ice?

The dog wasn't on a lead then while being walked in a public place?

I agree and then to risk fire fighters lives too, its insane.

Most dogs don't need to be walked on a lead in a public place but they can't read warning signs and don't know the risks. The reason dogs often survive falling through ice isn't because they're better swimmers, it is because they have big fur coats and stay warmer for longer and therefore have more time to find a way out. People love their dogs as much as they would a child and that is why so many people risk their own lives to rescue their pet - they would do the same in a house fire I am sure. Glad to hear everyone was OK in this case.

Well thank you Sherlock, 'dogs can't read' fancy that.
There was me thinking dog owners can't read.

In my opinion, the kind of people who would leave their dog to die because of a bit of cold (still) water, - are the same kind of people that would hesitate if a person were in the same position!

Be a responsible pet owner and put a lead on it.

WTF, WTF, WTF! So you lower human beings so they’re only worth what an animals worth! Nice, you must be a nice person to have as a friend!

Dogs have gone through millions of years of evolution – well billions since they were single-celled organisms – they should have evolved these basic survival instincts! Perhaps if it wasn’t for us humans, dogs like this one would have lost the “survival of the fittest” challenge! Clearly evolution hasn’t blessed this pooch with street-smarts – It’s only one or two degrees below freezing and he’s/it’s walking on a frozen body of water – the dog may not be consciously aware of this, however he should have known better!

And I don’t think you can fathom your entire body being plunged into “cold” water as you say! It would be horrific for us – It would be heinously, unimaginably bitter and would suck the life straight out of you! I have absolutely no idea how there are human beings out there that go swimming in ice lakes – for the normal human being it would be literally torturous – even if you don’t die yourself it would probably be the worst and most painful experience of many peoples lives!

I would obviously take any incident like this on its own merits, but if it was my dog in the same place and
situation as described and shown, - I would have gone in.

I don't know if that's because I learnt to swim in a river,- or because I've got more respect for my dog than I have *some* people!

Below is a quote from The Serpentine Swimming Club:

"The swimmers of the Serpentine Swimming Club race every Saturday
morning throughout the year, regardless of the weather. If the lake is frozen we break the ice and still swim."

As I said, a bit of cold (still) water!
