A man was taken to hospital after trying to rescue his dog from a frozen lake.
The man attempted to rescue the dog after it fell through ice on Wallasea Island shortly after 10am this morning.
Firefighters, who have repeated their warnings of the dangers of walking on frozen lakes and rivers, took the man home after he managed to get out the lake.
The dog was not harmed An ambulance crew attended at 10.48am and took him to Southend Hospital to be checked over.
He later returned home.

Surely they should have taken him to a vet? Another poor bit of Echo writing...

So a dog falls through the ice and this idiot of an adult then thinks it'll support his weight - fool!

Most dogs don't need to be walked on a lead in a public place but they can't read warning signs and don't know the risks. The reason dogs often survive falling through ice isn't because they're better swimmers, it is because they have big fur coats and stay warmer for longer and therefore have more time to find a way out. People love their dogs as much as they would a child and that is why so many people risk their own lives to rescue their pet - they would do the same in a house fire I am sure. Glad to hear everyone was OK in this case.
