Fast and Furious film could be shot on Southend seafront

A HOLLYWOOD film could be shot on Southend seafront, it has been rumoured.

The team behind the Fast and the Furious 6, has reportedly chosen the location to avoid disruption in London due to the Olympics.

Social networking site Twitter was buzzing with the news after the Sun newspaper reported the film crew would be coming to the seaside resort in the summer.

Paul Cotgrove, from the Southend-based film company White Bus, deals with enquiries from filmmakers looking to shoot in Southend.

He said he hadn’t received any enquiries from Universal about filming in the town, but would be happy to accommodate them.

He said: “We think it is a fantastic idea, but no one has told us yet.

“They have not contacted anyone down here for approval.

“We would be delighted to discuss it with them and think it would be a fantastic thing to have in Southend.

“I am trying to get hold of Universal studios in London to find out who made the statement.

“It is terrific they are thinking of using Southend as a location and we look forward to discussing their needs.”

The town has seen an influx of directors looking to film their movies and music videos in the town.

Gritty crime thriller Hard Boiled Sweets was shot entirely in Southend and BBC soap EastEnders spent several weeks filming here last summer.

There is a two-page 'special' in today's Echo about the death of six-year old Joe Ball at the hands of a dangerous driver.

Yet here we have a story about a film franchise that glorifies dangerous driving possibly being filmed in Southend.

If the council had any backbone they would make a statement today - before any decisions or announcements are made by any film company - saying we don't want this ignorant trash filmed in our town, that such rubbish is not welcome in Southend.

They are also making a film about false benefit claims made by overweight people. It's going to be called Vast and Spurious.

They are also making a film about Jimmy Choo.
It's going to be called Last and the Luxurious.

Oh come on, to suggest that people can't differentiate between a film like this and reality is insulting enough, to use that poor childs death and his families grief as an agenda for a dig at the council tops the bill.

Spot on Richy.

There has been no official announcement what so ever from the production company, white bus who run the filming side of things in Southend say they have not been approached at all so until either of them say anything I would take the whole thing with a rather large pinch of salt.

It would be a massive boost for Southend if it happened but sadly I don’t think it will.

As for more or less demanding that the council refuse permission for it to be film in light of last years tragic accident is just crazy and sick on Ray-Battys behalf. As Rihcy points out everybody knows the diffrence between reality and Hollywood, the film crews will do everything to make sure nobody is hurt they will follow the letter of the law and have full health and safty regulations in place.

If you apply that rule then you might as well ban all commercial filming in Southend full stop as one way or another an incident that has happened you could tentatively link in some obscure way to the film or TV show being made.

I have not used the tragedy of Joe Ball's death to have a dig at the council at all. Please read my post again, and this time try to comprehend it.

It is inappropriate to have a film that glorifies dangerous driving made in this town when we have had people killed on our roads by dangerous drivers.

Asd for people not being able to separate fantasy from reality, just take a look at some of the posts on this website by certain people who think speeding and dangerous driving are good things. These films are exactly what inspires them to drive that way.

I agree with Roy_Baty. Some idiots watch this stuff and think they can drive that way without consequences.

We should not be glorifying speeding, it's a totally mixed message.

Peace on the roads.

I think its a great idea for Southend. Whats wrong with it? It will probably attract more tourism to the town centre.

But then you get people like me who will try and copy the dangerous driving! And other people too!

That will help with road safety, these days a small minority of young people do not understand the inference between fact and fiction, often only finding out when they meet fact in the face after killing someone and then they expect sympathy which they get from all the do gooder's.

Remember the footpath killing and injuring of the young in Thorpe Bay, that is a typical example.

There are some ridiculous comments on here. Of course it's tragic when anybody is killed in road accidents, but it happens to thousands of people everyday around the world, and it's going to keep on happening regardless of whether you have films about fast cars or not.

What next? Ban Saving Private Ryan because it might encourage peopel to storm the beaches at Normandy and start shooting Germans?

Think it's just worried husbands who's wives have Vin Diesel on their "would" lists.
