Attempted robbery in Southend
10:56am Tuesday 19th June 2012 in Southend
A WOMAN was left shaken following an attempted robbery in Southend.
The woman, in her early 20s, was walking through an alleyway between Church Road and Lucy Road when she was approached by a man.
He stopped and asked for her name and age, before demanding she hand over her mobile phone.
The woman ran to a man passing by for help but the suspect ran off empty-handed.
The suspect is described as a white man with a slightly sun tanned complexion/olive skin, around 5ft 8ins tall, thin to medium build, clean shaven, with a large round face, large nose, black eyes, thick black eyebrows, long thin lips, yellow teeth, wearing a turquoise to sky blue hoody, dark jeans and white trainers.
Anyone with information about the incident on June 14 at 4.10pm is asked to call DC Reece Brent at Southend police station on 101.

I would imagine the person who attempted to commit this crime spends his time blazin, drinking and jackin up and only run off due to his paranoia! If he had money for a computer or smartphone I’m sure it’d go into lines, joints or syringes!

Same thing happened to me when I was 13 in Stratford. Surrounded by 5 black youths who wanted my phone (aka brick back then) – I just jumped over the seat and went over to this bloke sitting near me on the train, told him the group were trying to mug me and the gimps all just run off! If the mugger(s) are prepared to let their victim know what you look like what difference does it make if one other person knows what they look like? Complete p***y behaviour – bet most muggers are total fassi!

Allthough I have no proof for this statement, I'd swear blind that the crime statistics for Southend are no worse then for any other town of similar size.
As for more severe sentencing, I thought the myth of locking people up with even worse criminals and this leading to any apparent improvement for society as a whole had been burried decades ago, but obviously not.
And as far as deterrents go, the USA would be a prime example. Ever since they introduced capital punishment, there hasn't been a single murder. Seems to work a treat, doesn't it?

ane: Sorry and good morning to you. I am a very early bird. LOL
The third paragraph was a bit tongue in cheek really. Prisons, quite contrary to their intended purpose, do serve as places of apprenticeship for your criminal future. Basically, learn the tricks of the trade from others who have failed to be successful in this line of business too. Personally, I'd prefer to see more time spent on at least trying to teach young offenders some social skills, which obviously failed in their home. I am not saying it will be successful every time but one of them out of this circle would be a good result.
Not to worry and have a great day, the sun has graced our wonderful town and what better way to start into the day then with a brisk walk along a deserted beach (a bit late now, but it was fantastic at 5.30 this morning, comes highly recommended).

I have absolutely no problem ever with people disagreeing with me, after all, that's what makes life in a pluralistic society interesting and challenging.
And yes, male, 53, German immigrant (just to annoy those who hate all immigrants, even those like us, who actually now have British citizenship and are proud of it, LOL) and wife.
My wife isn't bothered either. She still does some care work for elderly people and frequently walks home alone, even from Woodgrange Drive, down York Road and not once did she have to report anything untoward having taken place.
As I've said before on another such occassion, I think there is a distinct difference between perceived risk/danger and what is actually taking place. Unfortunately, the Echo, like most other papers, needs such stories of gore and violence to satisfy the lower instincts we all have. Sadly though this does lead people to believe that things are far worse then they actually are.
Quite apart from which, I do find the Echo not exactly impartial, even on a good day, which I'd say are few and far between anyway. There is just too much scaremongering going on here and as we all know, there are those that just love to jump on that bandwaggon at the first opportunity. A lot of prejudice, not usually against myself since I have such a broad Essex accent, despite not being a native speaker but anybody with so much as a hint of one is easy pray. I recall a recent article about someone shooting a gun from a car at Hadleigh, if I recall right. Immediately the culprits were clear. Eastern European drug dealers, who else. Turns out, it was a born and bred Englishmen.
Anyway, I digress (again).
The problem you were referring back to is not one that is easily resolved but seeing how much Britain has changed since I first lived here in the late 70s and early 80s, increased affluence hasn't necessarily improved compassion. Coming from Germany, I was aghast to see how many people have to work on a Sunday. Weekends used to be times where families had the opportunity to come together, whereas today, Mum is off to work, just as Dad is coming home or worse still, nobody around for hours on end, leaving children and teenagers to their own devices. How, if there is nobody to teach them, can it be expected for them to acquire the required social skills we demand of them?
I don't have much sympathy for my fellow countrymen in general, but one thing they are still able to do is actually have a family life and I don't for one second agree with David Cameron that those that don't adhere to accepted and acceptable standards need to have their benefits withdrawn. This looks very much like the best way forward on an ever steeper downward spiral.
But then, that's only my two cents worth so to speak.
