Bronze sculptures hoisted onto Southend Pier

BRONZE sculptures were hoisted on to the pier to mark the start of an annual festival.

Robert Sobocinski’s sculpture exhibition on the Pier will open today (Saturday) to mark the launch of the Polish Arts Festival.

Events will be held in Gdansk and Sopot in Poland at the same time as this year’s showcase in the town.

The festival runs until September 2 and also includes a two-day accordion marathon on Southend seafront.

There will also be Polish films shown throughout the festival.

Festival director, Douglas Hunter, said: “The exhibition kicks off the fifth Polish Arts Festival. The festival is to build bridges between Southend and its twin in Sopot.”

Two day accordion marathon!??!? Blimey, it's difficult enough running a marathon without having to carry one of those great big squeezeboxes around while you're doing it!

Will they be building the bridges from the end of the pier or from the shore?
As "Soport is its twin", does that have a pier over a mile long, and is Soport on the other side of the Estuary? Wish they would clarify this item, as if it's that close surely they won't need bridges as one will do?

I'm sure it'll be another fine success, the last two I've been to were great. Especially some of the music in Priory Park, they have some great Jazz musicians in Poland and now obviously in Southend too. Good to see this continuing and by the looks of it growing.

Well done to all those who organise and run it.

Always a good event, shame good to see the Pier being used more, hopefully more people will go down to see the new arrivals.
