The Dartford crossing has been closed following the discovery of an unexploded Second World War bomb.
The road was closed after an incident on the Queen Elizabeth II bridge at around 9.12am on the A282 southbound approach.
Essex Police released a statement on its Facebook page, following the incident.
A spokesman said: "We are on scene at an industrial site in Oliver Close, Grays after an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered.
"We were called at around 8.55am today (Tuesday February 13).
"The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge was closed for a short time but has re-opened.
"A Ministry of Defence bomb disposal team is on the way and the bridge may be shut again later when they dispose it."
No injuries have been reported and no vehicles were involved in a crash.
Essex Highways have said: "Traffic is held at J31 under a rolling road block as incident is assessed."
An alert was also posted on Twitter for drivers heading towards the bridge this morning:
M25 QE2 Bridge CLOSED - All traffic has been stopped clockwise just before the bridge because of a police incident - police a planning to open one of the bores of the tunnel for clockwise traffic to use.

Diversions have been put in place for the M25 and A12.
The road has since reopened but is likely to close again upon the arrival of the Ministry of Defence bomb disposal team.
