AS Basildon’s newest nightclub opened its doors, we’ve delved into the Echo archives to have a look at pictures from the town’s disco past.
The demolition of nightspots Liquid, Envy, New York New York and JJs at Basildon’s Festival Leisure Park signalled the end of an era for a generation of south Essex clubbers.
Luminar Leisure, which owns the former superclub, wasted no time in razing the nightspot just two weeks after it closed for the last time.
The club complex has been there in a number of guises since the park opened in 1997.
Basildon’s nightclub scene was famous, with people coming to the area from all over the county.
Last night, Unit 7, in Basildon’s Festival Leisure Park, formerly Sky Bar, opened to the public for the first time.
In a change to the traditional nightclubs, this swanky venue has been decked out with pamper stations, including GHD hairdryers and hair straighteners.
The club, which has three separate rooms and a rooftop bar, uses unbreakable polycarbonate glasses and champagne flutes.
A total of £3million has been spent on the new club, which is about 50 per cent bigger than the former Sky Bar.
