Council is looking for a pier partner - yet again

Flexible approach - the council says it may even allow an investor to run a revamped pier Flexible approach - the council says it may even allow an investor to run a revamped pier

SOUTHEND Council is yet again looking for a private investor for the town’s world famous pier – despite the failure of so many previous plans for the landmark.

This time, senior councillors have agreed to take a more flexible approach, perhaps even letting a private firm run the pier once it has been redeveloped.

In the past, the council has always insisted on controlling the pier – right down to the timing of train services – something which has proved a major stumbling block.

Now council leader Nigel Holdcroft says it will remain as flexible as possible, in an effort to attract a private partner “for investment in and operation of the pier”.

He vowed the economic downturn would not prevent the council finding a partner for the venture.

The Tory leader explained: “It may seem crazy to be going out looking for someone to work with us now, but this is a long-term project and we hope to find companies with a long-term vision for the future.”

The hunt for private-sector cash for the pier was originally to have been launched at the Thames Gateway Forum in London last November. It was delayed by insurance negotiations in the aftermath of the 2005 fire.

Since then, redecking work at the pierhead have been carried out and a new station hase been built at the pierhead.

The plan is still to adopt a maritime theme for the redevelopment project, something backed by the public during a consultation exercise.

However, Mr Holdcroft said: “If we are unable to find a suitable partner with this theme, we will have to go back to the drawing board and look at alternatives.

“There will be no hasty decisions now.

“We will look closely at the feasibility of any ideas which come forward to us, to get the best for the town, its people and visitors.”

It is difficult to understand how any private company would wish to get involved with the pier development, Southend council are notoriously bad partners and in recent years the day to day running of the pier has been a total disgrace. The recent fire fighting failure was a direct result of council staff inneficiency and lack of proper funding by the council. So they will do what they always do nothing for a long time and then they will give it away with a big fat grant to a small time seafront trader

Much as it pains me to say it! But there seems no sence in keeping the pier. Knock it down or give it away, The council tax payers have had this like a millstone round our necks long enough. Personly I have not set foot on the pier since the new railway opened, and will never do so again.

"No hasty decisions"! Cant say 36 years is being hasty Nigel. I suggest Mr Holdcroft and his mates had better go back to the drawing board right now, as the chances of finding a partner are realistic as a "snowball in hell".
The Pier deserves better than successive adminstrations that show total mismanagement and pitiful failures. Wake up Southend Council to the fact you've wasted years waffling around achieving not very much. Obviously that policy will continue by the sounds of it. Ohhhhhh,I feel another consultation document coming on.

It is like watching paint dry!!

Perhaps it could be used as an immigration landing point for all the asylum seekers landing on rafts!!

At least the Govt would help with millions of tax payers money helping the financing, housing and benefits for the new immigrants otherwise their human rights might be abused and we wouldn't like that would we.

A man with common sense and his eyes wide open. When they build the monster at Coryton they will probably need the pier to build houses on as all the green belt will have been built over and be gone.

Ive said this before...Southend Council go and have alook at Swanage Pier.

there are a large no of sponsored Planks on Swanage Pier and it is nowhere near the size of southend Pier.

Its not difficult to see the potential from this and as I dont want to see the Pier demolished.
