A WOMAN whose mother was knocked down at a busy junction has joined the call for a crossing at the site.

Grandmother Updesh Porter, 67, suffered concussion and a broken nose and cheek bone after going over the bonnet of a red Citroen Saxo, in Downhall Park Way, Rayleigh, near the junction with Rawreth Lane.

She was staying with her 35-year-old daughter, Kamilla Young, who fears the accident earlier this month could have been much worse.

Mrs Young, a doctor, of Hullbridge Road, Rayleigh, said: "She still has bad headaches, but is a lot better. I think potentially it could've been fatal.

"Then I found out the junction was an accident waiting to happen."

Residents and councillors have been campaigning for a pedestrian crossing at the junction and have complained it is badly lit.

Rochford district councillor Ron Oatham is among those pushing for action to be taken by Essex County Council, which is responsible for roads, and has been in contact both with Mrs Young and Mrs Porter since the accident.

Mrs Young said: "We sincerely hope the conditions of the crossing on Downhall Park Way are improved to prevent a further and potentially even more serious accident. We're concerned about the poor lighting and lack of a proper pedestrian crossing there.

"The road is used by lots of families and children."

She said she was also keen to thank the good Samaritan who helped her disorientated mother after the crash, staying with her and calling 999.

Mrs Young said: "We were unable to find out the name of the witness, but should he be reading this, I would like to convey our heartfelt thanks for coming to my mother's aid and calling the ambulance.

"My husband and I have only recently moved to the area and greatly appreciate the efforts of this gentleman and other bystanders who helped at the scene.

It says something about the community we have moved into.

"We were also bowled over by the professionalism of the police, paramedics and staff at Southend Hospital."

Mrs Porter was admitted to Southend Hospital following the accident, but is making a good recovery.
