TRAVELLERS have ruined a village green in Canewdon after setting up camp there.
Three caravans and a trailer were set up behind the village hall, in Lambourne Hall Road, on Sunday and have been told to move by today.
Residents have watched as the travellers' vehicles churned up the grass on the land, owned by the Canewdon Community Association.
Terry Cutmore, leader of Rochford District Council, said: "I have been told they are tearing up the village green. It is very disappointing. That area is normally used for children playing and for Scout groups. It is on private land but we are doing all we can to help."
Shaun Scrutton, head of planning and transportation at Rochford Council said: "Where land is in private ownership, eviction would be with the landowner, but in such cases, the council will work closely with the police and other agencies."

I dont like to see land ruined in this way, I know I am usually the one that is on the travellers side, but only when I feel an injustice is being done to them. This is wrong though, it is a lovely piece of land and I think that while they are staying there they have a duty to clean it up after themselves and not to churn up the land.

Oh Lisa - what banana boat did you arrive on? Injustice? Travellers stick two fingers up to locals and the local community anywhere and where they decide to rob land. It's only blinkered idiots like you that stick up for them. And who pays Lisa? They get cash in hand from dodgy drives and tree felling whilst chucking the rubbish all over the place - the inland revenue only interested in screwing hardworking people who play the game - whilst we - the taxpayers have to foot the bill EVERY TIME. Injustice? People like you are too stupid to see when you're having the p taken out of you. Wake up and smell the coffee - they don't give a monkeys what you think.

Sorry Lisa, if you abide by the rules and behave in a decent and civilised manner, yes, but not when you treat other people's property with total disrespect and contempt.

... and having lived with this situation at Crays Hill for five years - and in the light of the recent Echo revelations, I have to agree with Mark, Silky & Co (sounds like a firm of solicitors!)
I have on countless occasions, explained to Lisa exactly what it is like living with travellers but it doesn't sink in.
Neither does extensive reportage in which the facts and evidence are presented in a way that is beyond question.
There will always be people like Lisa, bless her, who will not see the wood for the trees, until the day dawns that they wake up to the sound of trees being chopped down and the sound of the old Irish tumble drier churning out cement on a bank holiday weekend when the planning officers are enjoying themselves in their local pub.
I think that Lisa - and others like her - should reserve their compassion and fairness for those beleaguered folk whose lives have been blighted by such situations.
These guardians of the public morals need also to actually go to the places affected by it - and speak at length to those who run the gammut of anti social behaviour, mess, noise and intimidation.
I will stick to MY guns on something in the same way Lisa is doing.
It is this.
There is NO SUBSSTITUTE for experience when it comes to issues like this and in order to be completely fair, as Lisa would like to think she is, due consideration should be given to all sides of the story.
There is now no room left in this world for one-sidedness and the whole culture of self-appointed moral guardians for causes which are frankly, unjust, blatantly illegal, unnecessary (as these people are NOT homeless) and beneath contempt.
Save your compassion Lisa, for the poor souls whose age and disability make them truly disadvantaged and truly discriminated against.
The genuinely sick and needy and the genuinely homeless need compassion. Reserve it for them.
