Scrapyard boss told he must close down

SCRAPYARD boss has been given six months to close his business which has caused misery to families living nearby.

Dean Fewings, 41, yesterday lost an appeal to legitimise his unauthorised breakers yard and vehicles sales and repair business, which he ran from his home in Pudsey Hall Lane, Canewdon. The green belt site must now be used as farming land.

Residents who asked not to be named during a public inquiry chaired by the Planning Inspectorate at Rochford Council civic offices, said they had often complained about noise, HGVs and fires.

One neighbour said: "This is the result we hoped for, but it is too early to celebrate. We could still face another six months of noise and traffic."

Mr Fewings asked to continue running his business for 18 months, but planning inspector Lucy Drake refused.

She said: "Given the scale and nature of the unauthorised activities, and the significant impact on their surroundings and the living conditions of local residents, I can see no reason to allow them to operate for a further 18 months."

Terry Cutmore, council leader, said: "We will monitor the site to make sure unlawful activities cease and residents finally get some peace at last."

Mr Fewings was unavailable for comment about the decision.

l In a separate hearing, Mr Fewings has been ordered to put an end to a caravan site on his land.

An unofficial transit camp, occupied by workers and gipsies known to Mr Fewings must be bulldozed within six months.

However, two long-term traveller families living at Pudsey Hall Farm have been allowed to stay.

Since when were Councils concerned about green belt land? They're only concerned about it for farming purposes if they can't get enough flats or houses built on it to up their income. This man might have been breaking the law and was a nuisance to neighbours but don't think for one second the council are concerned about green belt land. Unless I've been living in a different dimension to the rest of you, Castle Point gave the green light to build on the Green belt between Church Road, Thundersley and the A127 Arterial Road, an area we used to call 40 Acres. But that increases money into their parasite coffers so don't worry about the green belt.

As per the quote above made by Mr Cutmore 'nuisance to neighbours'. I am one of at least 9 or so people who reside in Pudsey Lane who submitted affidavits in THE FAVOUR OF MR FEWINGS. There are a couple of residents in the lane who cause misery to the majority of the residents - complaining about other people when in fact they flout the laws themselves! Buildings on their land without the relevant permission etc etc. Yes I agree that there is a certain amount of traffic in the lane - however nothing else that occurs at this business has any detrimental effect. I know this is my opinion - and I also know that it is shared by the majority in the lane - not the MINORITY!

Sorry, but.....

HOW MANY houses are actually in Pudsey HALL Lane? 15 max? Is the "resident" above saying that they CONDONE that Mr Fewings has been tipping oil etc straight into the river??

Or were these NINE people that wrote affidavits all living in the same caravan, on the same illegal site on greenbelt???

Just asking. Before you ask me to keep my nose out, I did used to live in Pudsey HALL Lane in the 1970s.

I find that the judgement on Mr Fewings is somewhat harsh. I have seen the lorries that pass my home but i find them to be no other trouble then that. I also agree with the comment above about the council not caring about greenbelt land. The council are quite happy to build on greenbelt land if it suit them. Mr fewings is juts trying to make a living just like everybody else.

Most of the residents that have complained have moved into the lane fully aware of the site of a scrap yard at the base of the road. People who have lived here previous to the yard have not yet complained. The newer residents knew about the yard and should now accept it.

Further to the comment posted by 'Seen it today'. NO I do not live in a caravan - I live in a building MADE OF BRICKS! Shock, horror, gasp. I also know the other people who gave affidavits and surprise surprise they too live in houses / bungalows along the lane. I did not state in my comment how many people reside in the lane did I ? The site in regards to ILLEGAL? Can you oh wise one tell me why were all relevant licences issued by Rochford District Council i.e. exemption certificates, waste carriers licences etc. As far as I am aware Mr Fewings previously won planning permission for mixed use of this site - only for it to be APPEALED by Rochford District Council.

Also I did not mention that I condoned the oil accusations. The only comments I will now make is that IF Mr Fewings did tip oil straight into a ditch (which is what it is)would he be that stupid to also leave the open oil containers there! These were viewed ,by the environment agency ,along with an old fridge.I am aware that the environment agency visit Mr Fewings site regularly so Yeah it would be totally sensible for him to put oil into the ditch!Dare I suggest that the residents I previously mentioned would be that vindictive that they would not 'plant' such things to further their complaints. Who Knows? Common sense should prevail on that one! The ditch by the way also is polluted by sewage that comes from some of the houses in the lane! Did that happen back in the good old 1970's????? I would not ask you to keep your nose out as this is your opinion and the lst time I checked everyone is entitled to their own.

Pudsey Hall Lane Resident - wasn't your mate the one who was arrested at gunpoint by armed police last year? Charming Fellow.

Illegal = 10 criminal convictions + numerous failed appeals + ongoing prosecutions & criminality

Very few residents support Fewings, most oppose him but don't say so publicly because they don't want their houses burnt down. His supporters are scared, indebted or stupid.

And finally - if he didn't dump the oil in the ditch, why did he plead guilty?

..er, just one point.
Doesnt Illegal mean ILLEGAL? regardless of whoever complains / supports, if its not right it should be stopped. Or should we also start letting off drink drivers / burglars etc because they have done it before and they are actually "nice people" with friends who support them?
