Under nationalisation British Rail had to rely on meagre handouts from the Treasury and was not permitted to raise private capital so it was always a question of make do and mend.
If the amount of capital invested over the last 15 years had been at their disposal we would have a network as good as anywhere in Europe, most of which is nationalised with 80per cent electrified and cheaper fares than Britain.
So before Tory MPs and others start quaking in their boots, the railway will be maintained by Government nationalisation where privatisation has failed to live up to their contracts.
