Poor councillors tarnish the best

12:06pm Monday 8th March 2010

I have read the debate in the Echo about reducing the number of Southend councillors.

Garry Sheen, Independent candidate for Belfairs ward, Leigh, does not seem to realise reducing the number of councillors in each ward would actually reduce his opportunity to represent residents should he be elected, as the number of places on the committees would also fall.

As in any other walk of life, there are councillors who are hard working and some not so, but it is perfectly feasible on a busy day to attend both the Civic Centre and other venues in the town for meetings three times in a day, as both councillors Ron Woodley and Graham Longley must know.

I believe most councillors choose to represent their residents through a wish to make a difference and help them with their problems. Unfortunately, the minority who do not see this as their primary concern tarnish the names of all the others.

Martin Terry is being disingenuous when he signs himself as an Independent spokesman.

He should be honest and admit he receives a couple of thousand pounds each year for being the leader of the Independent group/party on Southend Council.
