High price of transit system

It would be almost impossible to create a high speed transit system for Southend. Apart from the enormous cost it would require buses, or preferably trams, to have designated lanes devoid of other traffic.

This would require four lanes on the proposed routes. The one in the Far East is computer controlled, runs at predetermined intervals, knows how many people are joining and alighting at each stop and will increase or decrease the frequency accordingly.

I am probably thinking too far into the future for the present council, which seems to delight in installing more and more traffic lights, costing vast amounts of money, and will do nothing to ease the traffic problems.

Better and cheaper public transport is the answer, but it comes at a price.

Why do bus or tram lanes need to be devoid of other traffic?

Agreed. Surely the point is to move more people in the same space occupied by a private vehicle whilst encouraging people to use the tram/bus by making it cheap and regular alternative.
Sadly at the moment public transport in this country is so expensive and inconvenient, that it doesn't even touch the convenience of my car even at £1.20 per litre!
