Nelson leaves us a flat spot

I was sorry to read in the Echo that the Nelson pub in Westcliff will be turned into flats.

There aren’t many British institutions left.

I remember spending many a happy hour or two in this great pub. No menacing bouncer on the door, bare floorboards and a host of cigarette burns to the floor all added a certain flavour of authenticity to the interior. Roast potatoes on the bar on Sunday morning, and someone knocking out a tune on the joanna. Great days.
