Building work is below par

Where does Southend Council get its builders?

The latest thing I have read is that the new cafe in Warrior Square is unable to open due to ventilation problems.

This follows on from the shop under the new pier entrance, which has never yet been able to open because of building defects, the lift which links the seafront to the Royals area, which had various problems when first completed, and the cliff lift, which wasn’t able to operate for a long time after its refurbishment.

A vast amount of money is spent on these projects, so one would at least expect them to be done properly.

I suspect all work is put out to tender. All applications are scrutinised and all, except for the most expensive, are thrown out. This "most expensive one" is, maybe, possibly chosen because it has a lifetime agreement to do all work for the council because, maybe, possibly one of the council/council bosses have a family member/friend who works for the company chosen. This choice of company may also, possibly include perks for the council/council bosses.
This is all just theory, of course, but maybe, possibly that is how the council gets it's building work carried out.
Other than that, I couldn't tell you but I agree with your views.

All council contracts should be open to public inspection.
