Do something for the teens

All we hear in the papers or from the council and police is how much the crime level is going up and the main culprits are the teenagers in the town.

What I would like to ask is what they are going to do about resources in the town for them like, five-a-side football pitches, basketball courts, youth centres and places where it does not cost much for them.

Most of the time they commit a crime out of lack of money or something to do because they are bored.

Councillors of Southend get to the end of the financial year and have millions or thousands to “spend” or lose it, so what do they do, spend it on new road layouts, surfaces, seafront and grass areas but nothing for the youth.

If I had the money, I would love to do something for the youth to also help get them into further education and work.

Well said DN. The same applies in Hadleigh where we have a particular shortage of things for young teens to do of an evening and when they have nothing to do and nowhere to go they get bored and do things they are not supposed to do. Young teens are a particular problem because they not old enough to get in licenced premises and not mobile or wealthy enough to travel far. In the past the young teens had two youth clubs plus a whole chain of cycle tracks in Hadleigh. Now they have nothing. Youngsters on Canvey have skate/cycle ramps and a "teenage village". Teenagers in most of the surrounding areas, such as Rayleigh and Leigh, have similar facilities but in Hadleigh they have nothing. Councillors please note as no-one else could or would provide such facilities.

Thank you Mrs Noble, well noticed and spoken, though I presume that you will earn little reward from the readers who feel happier when anybody between the age of 8 and 18 can automatically be referred to as a yob or thug.

On top of this, reporting on youth crime is hugely one-sided, generally biased and often wildly exaggerated. But as some of us know, only bad news is good news.

Any additional cuts made to schemes to keep youth out of trouble will in the long term be highly destructive.

Even better, involve those who will benefit from such grounds most in their creation, that adds pride of achievement and some willingness to protect their very own investment. Respecting youngsters a little more then society currently does goes a long way.

I am rather grateful for you having raised this important subject.
