A series of "gradual" timetable changes on the train line between Fenchurch Street and Shoebury will be brought in this year, bosses have said.

However, rail operator c2c said it had learnt its lesson from the fiasco in December, when the new winter timetable - which brought sweeping changes for commuters in many areas - caused misery for thousands.

Changes are now due to be made in May and December this year, but no final decisions have been made on the specific details.

Graham Bashford, spokesman for c2c, said the company was being much more open with rail user groups since December, when changes such as the loss of Laindon starter trains were introduced.

Mr Bashford said: "While we can't speak to all our 25,000 customers, we are dealing more with the user groups.

"What we are trying to do is make sure that the commuters in Thurrock get more frequent trains between 8.30am and 10am, which is referred to as the shoulder peak time.

"The problem was that this group of people would have benefited from the new timetable, so they lost out when the old timetable were reinstated."

Mr Bashford said the company wanted to ensure Thurrock commuters got a better service, without the changes affecting other travellers too heavily.

He added: "We have learnt from the problems in December and will be introducing the changes more gradually."

Mr Bashford also said longer term improvements were planned with Network Rail, including lengthening the platform at Grays and having more services from Shoebury running to West Ham.

Adrian Brown, from the Thurrock Rail Users' Group, said: "We welcome c2c's plans to introduce some additional services in the fringes of the peaks later this year.

"Also, after many years of pressure, c2c is now finally persuaded to try to provide a viable late-evening service through Thurrock, with half-hourly intervals up until later last trains."

... and before we know it the 'new' timetable that caused all the problems in December will have been gradually phased in...

Fantastic news, I travel from Purfleet and we have two commuter trains between 08.00 and 09.00 this is awful......... I am looking forward to the gradual changes, and I am sure that c2c will consult with everyone and make sure these changes are the right ones. This is a great step forward for Thurrock commuters..........

Question: Exactly what is the problem with the CURRENT timetable

Answer: NOTHING

Reason for change: ....Its a money making cost cutting exercise.

Severe overcowding on Thurrock trains?

Just cos you lot from southend get a choice of a seat everyday, you are oblivious to what else is happending on the route.

The housing thats gone up in Thurrock in the past few years has not been met with a corresponding increase in trains.

The aborted timetable tried to redress that balance, but failed.

c2c/network rail are planning improvments at Grays & West Ham but until these are implemented they only have minor scope for improvements.

Within the next few years ALL services on the line will probably need to be 12 car, both via laindon & Tilbury.

Unfortunately the government seems too preoccupied with other things to notice the railways are close to collapse.

Wonderful news!!! Thank you TRUG for all your efforts here, this is fantastic for Thurrock, hopefully gradual steps can be made to please everyone and c2c will listen to all concerned. Great stuff thanks very much!!!!

FAB!!!!!! There are now so many commuters from Thurrock that we need all the help we can get, and the service has been a misery since the old timetable was re-instated. Thanks so much for understanding our concerns at last, we look forward to these minor changes.

FANTASTIC, I am so pleased I travel into work everyday miserable because there are two trains for me to catch between 08.00 and 09.00 and I am either at work extremely early or extremely late, this is wonderful I look forward to these small (but hopefully helpful changes).

I moved to Purfleet in November (and seriously only moved there because I contacted c2c and asked if the timetable was changing), they said it was and there would be a much better serivce, is was still a 20 min wait between trains in the mornings but better. Anyway, I couldn't believe it when I heard the old timetable was coming back, what a blow, now very very angry and disappointed, 1 train every 30 mins in the morning - terrible absolutely terrible, please implement some changes for us poor Thurrock commuters.

THANKS

Question: Exactly what is the problem with the CURRENT timetable

Answer: NOTHING

I seem to recall the new trains as being one of the reasons for the new timetable - they accelerate faster, but take longer for everyone to get on/off.

The 'new' timetable took these features into account.

Oh, and the fact more people want to get on/off at West Ham

Well maybe this should of all been taken into consideration and more train units/track subsidised by the developers/council before planning permission went through to build all these 1000's of extra homes.....

How can the line accommodate so many people/trains when there is still a single track on certain parts???!!!

I think the Chafford devlopers paid for the Ch100 station, but that was crocked, I think its been rebuilt 4 times in its short 15 year history.

They are never going to double the Ockendon branch as its going to cost far too much money.

Another passing loop, and a bit of extra double track at each end, so the main line can be cleared if the branch is occupied, is as much as can be hoped for, but getting someone to pay for it is the problem. Is this even on the 'Thames Gateway partneship' radar?

And the government wants to get us out of our cars??? I totally empathise with your plight but still maintain its not about people or the environment - its about fleecing as much cash out of the motorist as possible. Maybe when the trains fall over all will realise this!

Actually, double tracking the Ockendon line is on the radar of the Thurrock Thames Gateway, along with a rail connection to Gravesend over/under the river, 2 new stations and 12 car platforms.

Improvements like these cant be costed or built in the short term so by the time they are built, we'll need more.

Interesting also that they only want 12 car platforms at Grays. I think Network Rail should also be focusing on increasing the line speed to 100MPH, c2c Electrostar trains are capable of this speed but currently only go upto (rarely) 75MPH.
