A PENSIONER who is celebrating his 90th birthday has proved he has wisdom and generosity after pledging to donate all his gifts to charity.
George Snood, from Canewdon, will celebrate his special day on May 11 with his family, comprising six children, 17 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
He would have been showered with gifts at a special lunch at Ballards Gore Golf Club, but instead he has given strict instructions for donations to go to Havens Hospices instead
The former asphalt roofer and car park attendant said: "My family asked what presents I would like. I said no pyjamas, socks or DVDs.
I don't need anything at 90 years of age, I have everything. I support Havens Hospices on a monthly basis anyway, so I have asked my family to make donations.
"The hospices do such wonderful work for both adults and children and I know that they will benefit from my birthday money."
Mr Snood, of Althorne Way, was a commando in the Second World War and was married to his wife, Annie, for 60 years. She died eight years ago.
Daughter-in-law Linda Snood said: "They always sent a Christmas and birthday card to every member of their family and George has carried this on even after Annie died.
"He has never forgotten and this is what we think makes him so special. George is very well loved and liked by everyone he meets and he is thrilled to be able to help Havens Hospices on his birthday."
Havens Hospices, which receives only limited Government funding, costs nearly £5million each year to run. This year, Fair Havens, in Westcliff, celebrates 25 years of care and Little Havens, in Thundersley, enjoys its tenth anniversary.
