A NEW bus service linking Southend Hospital with the centre of town should encourage more patients and visitors to leave their cars at home, staff say.

The number 17 Arriva service will start running on Thursdays only, beginning next week, to gauge the demand for a permanent service.

The bus will also call at Southend bus station, Tesco in Prince Avenue, Westcliff, and Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff.

The hospital's travel plan co-ordinator, Charlotte Humphries, hopes patients who attend nearly 30 clinics at the hospital on Thursdays will try the new service.

She said: "We are delighted Arriva has agreed to introduce this additional service and feel confident there will be a demand for it.

"It will be a great boon for patients living in that part of Southend and will remove the worry of having to find somewhere to park."

Arriva marketing manager Richard Lewis says the company will keep a close eye on the service.

He said: "We are always pleased to work with the local communities we serve.

"We hope the new service will be well used by people in the Westcliff area who do not presently have a direct link to the hospital.

"We will be monitoring usage of the service over the coming weeks and hope it can become a permanent part of our network of services in Southend."

hooray about time although i think the bus should run every day for 6 months to see how much it is used
as a business owner in hamlet court road we have really notiv=ced the difference since the bus stopped, a lot of our customers are elderly and live at the bottom of the road, station rd etc and are unable to get up to HCR, or to the hospital,
welcome back all our customers to hamlet court road, may ths bus run for many more years!!!

Perhaps the bus would get more use and be more effective in reducing parking issues at the Hospital if it covered the entire district that Southend Hospital's patients come from. Restricting it to a small area could distort the results and lead to the wrong decisions being made about bus's future.

why noy improve the parking anyway and stop charging disabled drivers who have no choice .

Speaking as a local councillor and someone who has been campaigning for improved bus services for a long time, I welcome this and and all bus improvements that can help people travel to hospital. We also need to ensure that people can easily access Southend Hospital by bus wherever they may live in the Borough. It is important too that Southend Council reverse its bad decision to change the free bus pass start time from 9.00am to 9.30am. This would help more patients to attend hospital appointments. I am currently lobbying the Council on this and bus users are welcome to write to me at the Civic Centre.

I hope that Arriva use a better standard of bus, and driver that they put on other services. Patients who have to go to the hospital all ready have conditions that a rough bus journy will only made them feel worse, thats why poeple prefer the comfort of their own or friends / relatives cars.

If the council didn't discourage car parks etc this could be a good 'Park and Ride' scheme thereby getting cars away from the vicinity of the hospital. How about Southend Council??

How about a shuttle bus from Prittlewell station?

I feel my blood pressure soar as soon as I realise that I'm going to have to drive to Southend Hospital. I'd happily take the train, but don't fancy the hike from the station.

With regards to your points Mr Marshwalker from Shoeburyness, to be fair, the people of Shoeburyness recieve the buses and drivers they deserve. Plus have you ever ridden a bus round Eagle Way at night? Most buses end up with smashed windows and graffiti on them. So whats the point of having newer buses and nicer drivers when alls they get is rocks and abuse thrown at them?

Why oh why only on a Thursday - is this the only day that out - patient clinics are run? The clinic that I attend is on either a Monday or a Friday and who will make the final decision to say if the service is going to be rolled out throughout the week? I wait with baited breath ! ! !
