A NEW rapid-response team should be up and running in Southend by September to combat flytippers.

A food recycling scheme is also to be introduced, as part of the new contract agreed with Southend Council's waste disposal operator, Cory Environmental.

The new contract will run for seven years, starting on Monday, September 29.

Ian Robertson, councillor responsible for public protection, said new vehicles would be fitted with radios, so they could respond quickly to reports of dumped rubbish. He added: "We have about a dozen hotspots in the town, where rubbish is dumped.

"This system will mean when the contractor is informed of flytipping, the nearest vehicle can be dispatched there quickly."

Mr Robertson said the new anti-flytipping squad was one of a number of innovations incorporated into the new contract.

"The great thing about this contract is it is actually cheaper than the previous one," he said.

"The company has targets which it is committed to reaching, including a target of 60 per cent recycling of waste in seven years."

Under the contract, there will also be an improved cleaning service in the High Street and along the seafront.

The food waste collection service tried out successfully in parts of the borough last year and will now be extended across the whole of Southend.

Cory will also take over the running of council tips in Stock Road, Southend, and Two Tree Island, Leigh.

It is important that the problem of fly-tipping is tackled. I would also like the Council to clear alleyways where rubbish has been dumped. This is a problem in my Council ward, St Lukes, and elsewhere in the town. The Council needs to do more on this too.

The news we have all been waiting the promised new contractor IS, the old one.
The contract is probably cheaper than the old one as they no longer clean the toilets.

This is fine as long as collections remain weekly.
If fortnightly collections are introduced as the Labour government wants, councils will have to provide free fly-tipping sites rather like traveller sites as we will not be prepared to have rubbish around the house and after all, already pay for its disposal.

Great, so the new contractor is the old inefficient one !!!!
So does that mean that we will still have mounds of rubbish left in the roads and on the pavement because the binmen don't do their jobs properly. When I get home from work on a collection day there is always rubbish left on my driveway or in the road where they have missed the dustbin cart.
Also I really do hope that the food collections are weekly otherwise there will be major health problems.
Oh and are we going to get more rubbish sacks? there are never enough delivered. I pay enough as it is for my council tax without having to continually buy extra black sacks.
