Peace protest fine scrapped

10:00am Friday 4th July 2008

A PEACE activist has avoided jail for non-payment of fines.

Irene Willis, 63, of Bucklands, Shoebury, attached herself to the front of a minibus with a bicycle lock at Faslane, Scotland, Britain's Trident nuclear submarine base on April 19 last year. She was arrested and later given a fine of £500 because the judge considered she had endangered her life. But Willis disagreed, claiming the driver knew there was someone locked to his vehicle.

However, at Southend Magistrates' Court she was let off the non-payment of the fine.
