Coach route returns by popular demand

A COACH company boss says he has rescued a popular commuter service to London as a result of overwhelming demand from customers. Swallow Coaches, based at Rainham, will run the X1, and X10 services from Southend and the X3 from Stanford-le-Hope into London.
Stephensons of Essex, based in Rochford, dropped the services last month saying they were no longer economic to run.
Gavin Webb, managing director of Swallow Coaches, said; “When I heard Stephensons was giving up the service, I had a look at it.
“When word got round, I received dozens of e-mails urging us to take over the service.
“After looking a bit more, I decided to give it a trial for three months and we started running on Monday.
“So far, it has been quite encouraging, but it is hard to tell this month when so many people are on holiday.
Mr Webb said at the moment, the X3 coaches were starting from Stanford-le-Hope, but he may look at running the service from Canvey later this year.
He added: “What has amazed me and I have never seen this before, is the way the commutters know one another. It is more like a club than people just travelling to and from London.
“People were even saying they would distribute leaflets for us to publicise the service and that is something which I have never seen happen before.”
