ROCHFORD Hundred remain bottom of the London One North table after suffering a 56-10 defeat at Colchester.

Their fourth-placed hosts ran in eight tries and that saw Rochford make it 10 games without a win.

Despite the eventual result, Rochford started strongly and took the game to the home side, forcing them in to making errors.

But it soon became apparent that given the ball the north Essex team were going to be a handful.

And that is how it proved with Colchester’s extra pace and ball skills, together with their lines of running and support play, gradually dismantling the Rochford defence.

With the score at 21-3 to the hosts at half time Rochford were still in the game, but Colchester went up a gear in the second session running in five converted tries and finished well deserved victors.

Rochford did have a period in the last 20 when they should have scored more, but they were unable to convert pressure into points and Colchester just counterattacked at pace to open up slack defence.

Hooker Byron Defreitas grabbed a try for Rochford and Dan Needham kicked a penalty, but they are now not back in action until Saturday, January 5, when they host third-placed Letchworth Garden City at Magnolia Road.

Rochford Hundred: Mark, Defreitas, Coombe, Mott, Knowles, J Needham, Farren, Whight, O’Connor, D Needham, Pickering, Stewart, Brown, Bavington, Spremulli. Replacements: JP Vaquez, Warner and Bracknell.

>BASILDON remain just above Rochford at the foot of the table following a 22-5 defeat at Brentwood.

Basildon played up the slope in the first half and a rampant Brentwood ran in four tries to lead 22-0 at half time.

In the second half, it was all Basildon and scrum half Jamie White scored five minutes after the break.

Jim Harman and James O’Brian then both had legitimate tries turned down by a poorly-positioned referee as Basildon made it six games without a win.
