South Woodham Ferrers stay top of table after win at Wisbech

SOUTH Woodham Ferrers remained top of the London Three North East table with an 8-3 win at Wisbech.

Woodham started to dominate after 15 minutes but spurned numerous opportunities with several close in line-outs coming to nothing.

And that remained the same even when Wisbech’s number eight was sin binned with 10 minutes of the first half remaining.

Soon after, Woodham were reduced to 13 men when Wilson and then Marshall were both sin binned close to half time.

The second period started with the game still at 0-0 and, with a two man advantage, Wisbech began a period of their own dominance.

But, like Woodham, they did not convert to points on their scoreboard until the 65th minute when they converted a penalty to lead 3-0.

At that stage, it looked like being a bad start to 2013 for Woodham.

However, they then stole the ball from a Wisbech line-out and passed it out to Digga on the wing who beat the last defender and went in at the corner to give Woodham a 5-3 lead.

Both teams then went for the killer score and it was Woodham who got it when Brown successfully kicked a penalty.

The victory kept Woodham just ahead of Norwich at the top of the table but Canvey Island slumped to second from bottom in the standings after losing 12-3 at home to Wanstead.

Wandstead’s set piece scrummaging saw them come out on top at Tewkes Creek and Canvey conceded a first half penalty try for collapsing the scrum.

Wanstead scored a second try in the second half while Canvey’s only points came from the boot of fly half Nic Ash.
