SOUTHEND United's home clash with Plymouth Argyle, which had been due to be played on Saturday, has been called off due to a frozen pitch.

Areas of the pitch, especially the goal mouth in front of the South Stand, have been left rock solid due to the recent cold weather.

And Blues' chief executive Steve Kavanagh claimed there was no option but to postpone the game against the Pilgrims.

“It’s disappointing because we would have liked to have got the game on but unfortunately the weather has meant the pitch has become frozen and it was deemed dangerous to play on," said Kavanagh.

“Of course we also had to take into consideration the long journey that Plymouth Argyle would have to make to get here.

“The weather is set to continue in the same vein today and on Saturday so the decision had to be made to postpone the game.

“We will begin work on finding a date to re-arrange the game and will update you as soon as we know.”
