KEVAN Hurst is fit and aiming to fire Southend United back to winning ways in front of a number of familiar faces at Chesterfield on Saturday.

The 27-year-old winger has returned to full training after recovering from the back injury he suffered during the 2-1 defeat to Brentford in the third round of the FA Cup.

And he is desperate to triumph against his home town club this weekend.

“It’s a match I always look forward to as it’s where I’m from and I’ll have plenty of family and friends there watching me play,” said Hurst.

“Last time I played there was for Morecambe and I scored to help us win, so it would be great to do that again.

“But it’s a far more important afternoon for the team because we need to get back on track and end this bad run we’re on at the moment.”

Southend have not triumphed in normal time in their last six games and have slipped down to eighth in the League Two table.

But Hurst will definitely be playing a part in Blues’ attempt to return to winning ways after shaking off a back problem.

“I’ll definitely be OK for the weekend,” confirmed Hurst.

“I’m not sure how I managed to pick up the injury but it was below my ribs and was quite painful at the time.

“It meant I had to come off against Brentford, but I’ve had an injection since then and it seems to have done the trick.

“The Plymouth game being off gave me a few more days to recover and it’s feeling fine again now, which I’m really pleased about.”
