SOUTHEND United’s Marc Laird has admitted it is touch and go whether or not he will be fit enough to figure at Chesterfield tomorrow.

The energetic midfielder is still struggling with the hamstring injury he suffered at Exeter City a fortnight ago.

And he is not sure if he will recover in time to take on the Spireites.

“I’m still touch and go for the weekend but I’m running again and things are certainly improving,” said Laird, 27.

“The injury isn’t as serious as it could have been or that we first feared.

“I’m still touch and go for the weekend and I’m not back in full training yet.

“But the good news is that hopefully if I do miss the game tomorrow I won’t have to too many more.”

Laird is also looking forward to making a return to action as that will also reunite him with Michael Spillane.

The duo had a short spell together at Brentford during the 2010/11 season.

And Laird is confident Spillane will do a good job for Blues.

“He’s good on the ball and also in the air so he’s certainly a good signing for us,” said Laird.

“When we were at Brentford together he was right-back and I was right wing so it will be a bit different this time but I’m looking forward to it.”
