MICKEY Spillane was left wishing he could play Chesterfield every week after beating them 1-0 on his Southend United debut on Saturday.

The 23-year-old midfielder produced an assured performance in the centre of the park.

And that helped him secure his second victory of the season at the Proact Stadium, having previously won there 2-1 with Dagenham and Redbridge back in October.

“It was a great way to start my Southend career and Chesterfield seems to be a lucky ground for me,” said Spillane, who opted to join Blues ahead of the Spireites.

“It's the second time I've won there this season so I might ask if we can play there every week now.

“But it was a very tough game and, the way it went, I think we would have been happy with a point so to end up with all three was brilliant.”

Spillane's former Dagenham team-mate Gavin Tomlin popped up with the only goal of the game to earn Blues their first league win of 2013.

And that was far more enjoyable for Spillane than having to sing in front of the Blues squad at a team meal the night before the game.

“All new signings have to do it and I went completely red and had a few rolls at me too,” laughed Spillane.

“I sang Stand By Me but once it's done you feel much better and I think everyone takes to you a bit more.

“The football went better than the singing but it's been a good start for me here with this result and we need to keep it going.

“I came here to try and help get the team promoted and we need to keep getting good results like this if that is to happen, starting with Saturday's game against Oxford.”
