SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock was pleased to see Oxford's controversial new goalkeeper Luke McCormick lose 1-0 on his return to the Football League at Roots Hall.
But the Blues boss, who worked with McCormick at Plymouth Argyle, now hopes to see the shot-stopper rebuild his career.
The keeper joined the U's late on Thursday night and went straight in to their starting line-up for his first League appearance since being jailed in 2008 for causing the death of two young children by dangerous driving.
He was jeered throughout the match by Southend's supporters but Sturrock hopes the shot-stopper can rediscover his best form between the sticks.
“Luke is a very competent goalkeeper who I know well from Plymouth and I hope he can rebuild his career now,” said Sturrock.
“He made a big mistake, which people don't want to discuss, and nobody can ever take away what happened or the emotion involved with that.
“But he's paid his dues and I hope he can go on from here and do well.”
