MARC Laird wants to cap a memorable week by helping Southend United triumph at Accrington Stanley tomorrow.

The Blues midfielder became a father for the first time just a few days ago when his partner gave birth to a baby boy named Harrison.

And Laird wants to celebrate his arrival by helping Paul Sturrock’s side secure a fourth successive win.

“I can’t put in to words how becoming a father feels,” said the Scotsman.

“My partner has been brilliant and I haven’t had too many sleepless night just yet so I’ve been able to prepare for the game in the right way and it would be great to get another win to make it a perfect week.”

Laird looks set to go straight back in to the starting line up at the Crown Ground having been cup tied for Tuesday night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash at Leyton Orient.

Mickey Spillane is also available again after missing out against the O’s.

But Laird expects them to find things tough against Accrington side fighting against relegation.

“It will be another tough test for us and we know we will need to work hard if we are to come out on top,” said the 27-year-old.

“The lads all did that superbly against Orient in the week to get a great result and we will need to do the same this weekend.

“Promotion remains our number one aim as well so we need to make sure we pick up more points because we’re only three behind third placed Cheltenham now and we also have a game in hand on them.”

Saturday’s game will see Blues begin life without Michael Timlin who broke his leg against Orient on Tuesday night, while two members of Southend’s regular back four are doubts for the game.

Boss Paul Sturrock was not keen to reveal the identity of the players but Luke Prosser and Anthony Straker have both been placed on standby should the players fail to recover.

Blues will also definitely be missing top goalscorer Gavin Tomlin who Sturrock has confirmed will now be missing for a good few weeks with the thigh strain he suffered in training.
