BILLERICAY Town owner Grant Gordon feels that other clubs accuse them of playing an ugly brand of football to cover their own “shortcomings”.

Town picked up a terrific point – which Gordon felt should have been all three – with a 1-1 at fierce derby rivals Chelmsford on Monday.

Afterwards Clarets manager Glenn Pennyfather said “they made the game ugly and we played into their hands”, comments which have irritated those at New Lodge.

Gordon said: “I think because we have two giant centre backs (Rob Swaine and Chris Wild) we get a bad rap.

“But apart from Jay May (Town’s centre forward) we are a side full of small and skilful players like Glenn Poole, Paul Semakula and Junior Luke.

“So I think when we hear things like this we think it is just a way for other teams to make light of their own shortcomings.

“If Chelmsford were good enough they should be able to play their football against us, and I think what’s been said is a bit embarrassing.

“And anyone who watched the game will tell you that the only team playing ‘hoofball’ that night was Chelmsford.”

Gordon says the team need to build on four points from the last two games, which have both been away, with another good display at Maidenhead United today.

Billericay start the weekend second-from-bottom in an incredibly congested table which sees them just five points behind eighth-placed Hayes & Yeading.

They have games in hand on many teams, and know for sure a win tomorrow will take them above Maidenhead, but Gordon’s anticipating a tough game.

He said: “It’s not an easy place to go. Like us, they work very hard and this will be a tough away fixture.

“But we’re happy with how we’ve played in our last two games and we’ll be going there to win.”
