SOUTHEND United have signed Danny Mayor on a month long loan from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 21-year-old year-old winger has joined Blues for an initial 28 days with the option of extending the deal until the end of the season.

And he looks set to make his Southend debut in tonight's League Two clash against Cheltenham Town at Roots Hall.

"We're very pleased to have brought Danny in to the club," said Blues boss Paul Sturrock.

"He gives us more options in the midfield area and, having played at a higher level, he's someone who I think will do well for us while he's here."

Mayor started his career with Preston North End and made 77 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring three goals.

The winger also made three appearances during a loan spell with Tranmere Rovers in January 2009 before he joined Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the current campaign.

Since then, Mayor has played nine times for the Owls but he has made the starting line-up just once and is now keen to taste first team football on a more regular basis with Southend.

Mayor is also able to play in next Wednesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash against Leyton Orient.
