Southend United's Danny Mayor: I've got to learn quickly

SOUTHEND United’s Danny Mayor will be bidding to find out more about his new team-mates before Saturday’s clash with Northampton Town.

Mayor made his Blues debut against Cheltenham on Tuesday night, just hours after signing on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.

And even he was surprised by the whirlwind nature of the nature.

“It was great to play, but it certainly was a bit hectic,” said the 22-year-old winger. “I heard about the interest late on Monday so it all happened very quickly.

“But now it’s important I get out on the training ground and get to know a bit more about the way the team plays and all about the other players as well.”

Mayor went straight in to Southend United’s starting line-up against Cheltenham and looked lively down the left flank.

However, his bright bursts forward were unable to prevent Blues suffering a 2-1 defeat.

And Mayor was disappointed to start his loan spell with a reverse at Roots Hall.

“I enjoyed my debut but I thought we possibly deserved something from the game,” said Mayor, who started his career with Preston North End where he made 77 appearances.

“But we’ve got a couple of days now before another big game so I’m hoping I can settle and make an impression as soon as possible.”

Mayor now hopes to keep his place in the side for another crucial clash with eighth placed Northampton at Roots Hall.

And he wants to keep fans entertained.

“Hopefully the way I play will excite the fans,” said Mayor.

“The appearances I have made for Sheffield Wednesday so far this season have mainly come from the bench so it will be nice to hopefully get some full matches under my belt.

“That’s what I’ve come here to do, to try and make sure I get back to full fitness, get some 90 minutes and hopefully help Southend United push for promotion and also get to Wembley in the JPT.”
