Kevan Hurst battles for the ball with AFC Wimbledon's Ben Dickenson
DOZENS of Southend United supporters ensured tonight’s game with AFC Wimbledon was given the go ahead after helping to sweep snow off the Roots Hall pitch.
But so poor was Blues’ performance in suffering a disappointing 3-1 defeat against the Dons, they must now be wishing they had not have bothered.
The fans’ efforts initially seem to be rewarded when Sean Clohessy fired the hosts in front from the penalty spot.
However, the visitors hit back with a trio of strikes to secure their first ever victory after Southend who had won the previous four games between the two sides.
The latest meeting of the teams started slowly and Blues swapped their 4-5-1 formation to a 4-4-inside the opening 15 minutes with Ryan Leonard moving on to the left flank and Bilel Mohsni pushing further forward to partner Britt Assombalonga in attack.
But, despite the change of system, it was AFC Wimbledon who continued to enjoy more possession without converting that in to clear cut goalscoring chances.
That made for quite a dull opening 29 minutes, until the game suddenly exploded in to life with two goals in the space of three minutes.
Blues hit the back of the net first when Pim Balkestein handled a right wing corner from Kevan Hurst and referee Dean Whitestone immediately pointed to the penalty spot.
That enabled stand in captain Clohessy to step forward and fire home for the second game in succession as his 12 yard shot flew in to the right hand side of the net, just past the despairing dive of Dons goalkeeper John Sullivan.
The goal was Southend’s first in the opening 45 minutes of a home league game since Assombalonga netted against Dagenham & Redbridge in September.
However, Dons were back level just three minutes later when Balkestein made amends for giving away the penalty when his close range header from Sammy Moore’s left wing corner was tipped in to the top left hand corner of the net by Southend goalkeeper Paul Smith.
In reply, Hurst then sent a low left footed shot straight at Sullivan from just inside the penalty area but the Gulls also meant in front just before the break when substitute Jack Midson teed up Kevin Sainte-Luce and his low shot was saved by the legs of Smith.
In a bid to improve at the break, boss Paul Sturrock made his first change of the game with Neil Harris coming on to replace Leonard.
But it was the Dons who started the second period strongly and took the lead in the 47th minute when Gary Alexander’s right wing cross picked out Midson at the near post and the former Southend loanee headed in to the back of the North Bank net from six yards.
AFC Wimbledon should then have made it 3-1 in the 55th minute when Sainte-Luce shrugged off Anthony Straker to race clean through on goal but the winger could only drag a 12 yard shot wide of the left post.
Blues boss Sturrock attempted to make the most of the left by bringing on Barry Corr for Mickey Spillane in the 64th minute but the Dons made a double change of their own three minutes later with Luke Moore and Jesse Darko entering the action.
And it was Wimbledon’s substitutes who made an immediate impression as Darko controlled Meades’ right wing cross and teed up Moore who, with his first touch, guided a low, left footed shot in to the bottom right hand corner of the net from 20 yards.
After that, Blues made their third and final change with John Spicer coming on for Straker but they were unable to get back in to the game as their play-off hopes suffered a huge and unexpected blow.

Disgraceful really - I give up. If there was a prize for inconsistency ......... but there isn't. These players don't seem to care about anything but their wages which isn't surprising as they're all fairly low-grade jobbing players or loanees. And Sturrock can take the club no further. PS - Yes, I know about Wembley, but the JPT counts for nothing really.

Even going shopping with her indoors on a Saturday appeals more than going to Roots Hall! I agree with Reginald47that Sturrock can't take us further atm. The worst performance this season by far!
The whole team was aweful. Everyone of them and even he manager seemed to have lost the plot with the subs he used.
If we can't beat teams like Wimbledon who are near the bottom and Barnet then quite frankly we don't deserve to go up.
I cannot describe how abject the players were. I have nothing personal against any of players who showed up tonight. But poor Straker had a nightmare against their right winger. Smith seemed slower than normal. Spillane couldn't get near the ball and looked really out of his depth. Moshni showed a few nice touches but in my book shouldn't even be here. Hurst was very quiet. And Assombolonga just doesn't seem to be at the races. He's looked off the pace for weeks now. There was no spark at all.
PS I think has done well over the past 2 years. But tonight I have to question for the first time his selection and tactics.
Firstly we are at home to a team that is bottom of the league. So why play one up front? Not only that we then pump long balls to a player who will never win a header. We then have moshni of the left? Spillane sitting on the toes of Cresswell who incidentally was non existant today and prosser who continually hoofs the ball high and long all game.
So we can see that Straker was going to struggle from about the 2nd minute. If you had moshni up front he could win his fair share of flick ons etc to cause a problem as he has done in the past.
Anyway we get a lucky pen. Well taken by clohessy. Golden rule, donot concede straight away. WTF was going on for the corner. Moshni missed it. Cresswell missed it. Everyone's standing still and smith just pushes it into his own net. Their second was equally embarrassing. Why was smith waiting for it and how did midson get in front to get the goal? It was unbelievable. By this time Harris has come on for the ineffective Leonard. Corr on for Spillane. Then the real mind blower spicer on for Straker. With bloody Eastwood sitting who is clearly better than all of them. When Eastwood has come on in the past he makes a difference. Why the hell doesn't Sturrock play him. It's a joke. Straker and Spillane are simple not good enough. Spicer bless him shouldn't be at any club. He's not up to us. So why does sturrock insist on playing and making the wrong decisions. I do not get it.
We then have a situation where moshni who in actually fact can be our most effective attacking player, playing further and further down the pitch eventually player centre back along side Cresswell. All te players were switched about from at he start a 4-1-4-1 formation, to a 4-4-2 formation, to a 4-3-3 formation to a I haven't got a clue where or what you want me to do formation. Hurst went from the middle to the left then eventually on the right. He needs to play on the right so that he can cross the bloody ball so that we can then score. It's really that simple. We then get corr or moshni in the box. With either Assombolonga or Eastwood. It's not rocket science.
It was horrible to watch. And for the first time in a long time I thought about leaving early and asking for my money back. It was shocking. These so called professional footballers get paid for that rubbish they served up tonight. And I don't mind losing, and Wimbledon deserved it and done well. But it's losing when the team has no guts or fight. It's losing when they don't try. It's losing when they think they can just turn up and roll over a team who are fighting for the existence. I blame all of the players and I blame sturrock. He needs to sort this mess out and quickly.

Total rubbish! Sturrock needs to go now as Ive said before his tactics have ruined this team. Most of the players are not worthy of this level of football, As for Moshni what ishe even doing at the club after the way he has treated everyone, The good times have long gone for this club.

The temptation to take it easy in league games to maybe avoid missing out on a Wembley final through a possible injury might be a factor. One wonders if this scenario could exist. Given the club's injury record of the last 2 years it must prey on some players minds.

No doubt the players should be absolutely ashamed once again at their performance but the mindset clearly isn't right against the so caller smaller teams. Sturrock saying he's confident as all of last few games are against teams in the bottom half. This is so naive as all the teams down there are fighting for something and have more desire in one of their players then we have in the whole squad.

It now looks like not even going to make the play offs, let alone get promotion this year. Our only possible salvation is winning the JPT at Wembley and I shall be there supporting SUFC, but the real prize was always promotion.
I would think we will have a different manager next year, but I have to admit that PS in many respects has done well with working with the hand that he had, He has been unlucky that the injury situation has been the watershed of a good season turning bad, but that does not excuse his performance as a manager last night.

It now looks like not even going to make the play offs, let alone get promotion this year. Our only possible salvation is winning the JPT at Wembley and I shall be there supporting SUFC, but the real prize was always promotion.
I would think we will have a different manager next year, but I have to admit that PS in many respects has done well with working with the hand that he had, He has been unlucky that the injury situation has been the watershed of a good season turning bad, but that does not excuse his performance as a manager last night.

Southend is stuck in a rut if they can't afford to bring new players in.
Bentley needs to start over Smith. He is young and hungry to achieve Smith just doesn't seem bothered and doesn't communicate with the back 4!

We all know Southend will never be a big club but it still does not mean that you cannot have success on a limited scale.
Paul Sturrock has done ok but he will always be the nearly man, also he has been unwell and as we all know it does affect your way of thinking.
I say let him run out Southend at the mickey mouse cup final then maybe let him go without any animosity on both sides.
You only have ever to look at Brian McDermott at Reading who I feel has over achieved at a club probably that Are an average championship side to realize that continuing success is the only ly way to keep your job.
The one thing that did **** me off with Sturrock is that he defended the child killer who was in goal for Oxford,stating that he deserved another chance was crass to say the least ,you tell that to the family.

Some pretty fair comments on last nights "performance", but did any reasonable supporter, thinker or follower ever really think in August...truthfully- that our fortunes this season would be any higher than , as I have predicted many times , MID table ? Be honest !
Also even last year I questioned whether Sturrock had by then gone as far as he could for the Blues,,,considering everything.
BUT celebrate, enjoy and be grateful we can still see the Blues (no doubt at reduced prices) next season in Div 2 and at Roots Hall ......of some wonderful memories ! CHEERS.
